- The recommended mounting height- distance from the hob to the hood is usually 65cm to 75cm (depending on manufacturers guide) for optimal ventilation.
- Most countertop height from the floor is 85cm to 90cm.
- Estimate floor to hood height = 75cm+ 85cm= 160cm.
Most of us will not want to be in this scenario after choosing, buying and installing a kitchen hood.
- How many cooks are there in the kitchen?
- Who is the main cook?
- How tall are the cooks?
- Would any of you be bumping your forehead against it when you are using for the first time?
Not to worry! There are solutions for it:

1. Accept & adapt– If the taller cook is not the main cook and does not cook frequently, it might be fine.
2. No hood– Do away with a hood or use a downdraft hood.
3. Reduce hood overhang– Buy a hood that has a shorter depth or ensure the countertop’s depth is longer than the depth of the hood.

4. Angled Hood design– There are some contemporary models with a 45 degree to 60 degree angle.
5. Increase mounting height- Increasing the mounting height might reduce the overall suction power and effectiveness of the ventilation.
6. Hob design-Avoid using the deeper burner of a four burner square hob as you will need to reach in or position the built in hob closer to the edge of the countertop.
